The Aila Durgoto Sanghati Mancho has submitted a Memorandum observing
8 months of Aila. The memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister today
demanding immediate repair and reconstruction of embankments damaged
by cyclone Aila in May 2009. The memorandum said that more than 100
thousand acres of lands are still under water. The roads and highways
have broken and country boats are only vehicle to move. More than 100
thousand people are still on the embankments as their houses and
cultivable lands are under saline water.
The speakers said that the Bangladesh Water Development Board is
continuously delaying to repair the embankments. They planned to
construct ring enclosures in July 2009 but it was not implemented.
Later, they committed to reconstruct the damaged embankments within
November 2010. It was also not implemented. Now the BWDB call for
tender but decisions on repairing major 6 damage points are yet to be
taken. The speakers demanded interference of the Prime Minister to
reconstruct the broken embankments as soon as possible.

address the gathering before submission of Memorandum.
The memorandum has also been sent to the Minister of Food and Disaster
Management and Minister of Water Resources over fax.
