Cyclone Aila hit the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh on 25 May 2009 and caused 179 death and damage of more than
700 Kilometers of coastal embankments. At least 100 thousand people had displaced and 150 thousand people lost their cultivable land and other livelihoods because most of the areas of Koyra and Dacope under Khulna District and Shyamnagar and Assasuni under Satkhira districts were submerged under saline water and are still washed twice daily by the severe saline water. After a long 10 months, the damaged embankments are yet to be repaired. Thousands of people are living in huts on the embankments.
Learning this situation, Ms Sadika Parvin Popy, one of the top celebrity cinema actresses of Bangladesh is going to visit cyclone Aila affected communities in Dacope to share their sufferings. 3 journalists of television channels of Bangleadesh will visit the areas with her.
After visit Popy will participate in a 'Meet the Press' program in VIP Lounge of Khulna Press Club at 2:00 PM. The program is supported by Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) and implemented by Humanitywatch.
