The Aila affected people of different coastal areas of southwest zone at a rally at Khulna deputy commissioner office premises Wednesday morning demanded end of saline water shrimp cultivation in agricultural lands of the zone. The program was organized under Bangladesh Agricultural Week of the Youths initiated by the CSRL Platform.
The speakers at the rally also demanded immediate reconstruction of Aila affected embankments, stopping saline water intrusion in the coastal agricultural lands, special allocation in the coming budget for development of coastal agriculture, exemplary punishment for the people involved in embankment damaging and composing special policy for coastal embankment management.
The influential shrimp enclosure owners who damage the embankments for their own profit for shrimp cultivation have forced the poor people of the coastal zone to suffer severely in Aila, alleged the speakers, adding that the influential shrimp cultivators are also contractors of embankments and they have been keeping the affected areas submerged with saline water, without working after getting the works of embankment reconstruction.
