Aila affected people rally demand end of saline water shrimp cultivation in agricultural lands of southwest zone

The Aila affected people of different coastal areas of southwest zone at a rally at Khulna deputy commissioner office premises Wednesday morning demanded end of saline water shrimp cultivation in agricultural lands of the zone. Arranged by Humanitywatch and PRAN with the help of Campaign for Sustainable Rural Livelihood (CSRL), the rally was attended by the Aila affected farmers and fishermen carrying different local agricultural instruments and fishing tools. The program was organized under Bangladesh Agricultural Week of the Youths initiated by the CSRL Platform.
The speakers at the rally also demanded immediate reconstruction of Aila affected embankments, stopping saline water intrusion in the coastal agricultural lands, special allocation in the coming budget for development of coastal agriculture, exemplary punishment for the people involved in embankment damaging and composing special policy for coastal embankment management.
The influential shrimp enclosure owners who damage the embankments for their own profit for shrimp cultivation have forced the poor people of the coastal zone to suffer severely in Aila, alleged the speakers, adding that the influential shrimp cultivators are also contractors of embankments and they have been keeping the affected areas submerged with saline water, without working after getting the works of embankment reconstruction.
They also alleged that the influential shrimp cultivators have been cutting the reconstructed embankments to pour saline water in their enclosures and, on the other hand, those who have been opposing the misdeeds of the saline water shrimp cultivators have been facing oppression.
Chaired by Khulna Nagarik Forum chairperson Sheikh Abdul Quayum, the rally was also addressed by Manirul Islam of CSRL secretariat, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman of Greater Khulna Development Cooraination Action Committee, SA Rashid of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Monirul Haque Bachchu of Biplobi Workers’ Party, Rasu Akhter of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad¸ Shariful Islam Salim and Hasan Mehedi of Humanitywatch and advocate Ruhul Amin of Dacope Upazila Nagarik Parishad, among others.
Prior to the rally, the participants of the rally brought out a procession from Khulna Press Club premises bearing agricultural and fishing tools and ended at Khulna DC office premises after marching main city roads.
Following the rally, the affected people submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through Khulna deputy commissioner to press home the same demands to save agriculture of the southwest zone.
Different local and national leading newspaper such as Daily Prothom Alo, Daily Kaler Kantho, Daily Jaijaidin, Daily Purbanchal, Daily Janmabhumi, Daily Probaho, Daily Probartan, Daily Anirban and Daily Tathya published the news of the program with due importance.
